"Review: PerformerTrack"
(Article from 'The Voice Over Insider' -
The Premiere Magazine For Voice-Over Talent
)

By: Julie Williams

If I were to sum up the PerformerTrack experience in one word, it would be simplicity. Holdon Log has created an excellent online tool for you to, well, track your performance! Unique in its capabilities, this program was created specifically for performers - whether they be rock stars, sitcom actors, or voiceover professionals. The simplicity of its user-friendly design is one of its charms. Your online page simply looks like a professional business organizer. Well, two, actually. It sports tabs along the right side - kind of like dividers in your planner.

It's easy to use, as well. Pre-defined dropdown menus, convenient checkboxes and appropriately placed field boxes make entering information simple, and fast. And because it's online, you can access your information from any computer - no matter where you are. But don't worry! Even the creators of this program will not have access to your personal information. No one has access to your coveted client list, or your income information, except you!

I mentioned above that there were two organizers on your page. One is called the Auditions/Booked project log. In it is where you can track your auditions, note which agent or source submitted you for the audition, who your contacts are, where and when you need to go, etc. Then you also track which of the jobs you landed. This organizer - or "logbook" - as they call it, is where your contact list is housed, your appointment calendar is kept, income/expense record entered and statistical breakdowns are tabulated (What's your audition to booking ratio?).

Managing your contacts is as easy as everything else in Performer Track. You can quickly sort contacts by first name, last name, company, or email address, and of course, search by type of contact. With one click, an appointment can be added with the client - and it's linked to your calendar. Another click will give you driving directions from your primary location to theirs. You can export the contacts as well by type or targeted list... to print labels, mail merge, or create e-mail marketing lists. There are too many features to list here, but suffice it to say that Performer Track does just about anything that other contact managers do - including providing ample space where you can record time/date stamped notes about the contact.

One area in which we "creative" types often fall short is in record keeping. PerformerTrack's Income and Expense trackers are so simple to use. Countless categories are already populated for you to track expenses. For example, what other expense organizer has categories for you to track expenses related to professional costumes? Or coaching fees? Or studio time? Does any other program categorize income using such industry specific terms as "ADR/Looping?" "residuals" and "buyout". This program even allows you to tie income to a specific run of a project. The PerformerTrack income and expense categories are searchable by multiple criteria, including date, and payment type, among others.

The other logbook is called the Essentials Log. It holds the essential information that's pulled through your logbooks wherever it's needed. It's basically a holding place for information such as your active representation (agents, managers, publicists, etc.) and resources - such as headshots and demos.

This program gives attention to detail that many voiceover actor's don't think of. It can give you driving directions, and calculate your mileage rates. When you first set up your account, you'll be asked for your starting point. Consider mileage, for a minute. True, we don't typically travel much farther than our home studios. But there are times that we do drive on business. And when we do, Performer Track calculates the business travel mileage automatically - based on the current mileage rate. For U.S. residents, they've even got a "cheat sheet" for you so you can enter the right mileage rate. By the way, if you don't track your mileage - you really should. It can add up fast!

One of the most valuable things that creators, Holdon Log, have to offer, is the free training on how to use this program. There are regular webinars and videos on how to set up, and get the most use out of PerformerTrack. They've also posted several tutorials online.

I realize that every single feature PerformerTrack offers can be found in another program. But as far as I can tell - no single program offers such a wide variety of needed tools all in one place. And it's industry specific to boot! PerformerTrack works on both Mac and PC platforms, with multiple browsers including: Safari,Explorer, and Firefox.

Holdon Log charges an extremely reasonable annual fee of $119.40 for use of this service.
